The trailer for the Gleipnir anime dropped a few days back, and had the entire fandom in a tizzy; the beloved manga series by Sun Takeda is getting an anime adaptation, which means it will acquire an even bigger fanbase, as anime watchers are a lot more in number than manga readers.
The series is scheduled to premiere on April 5, and the show is being adapted by Japanese animation studio Pine Jam; the trailer revealed a rather grim but dynamic vibe which could only help the series, as it has a lot of potential as a high-octane watch. Here’s all that you need to know about Gleipnir before the pilot episode drops:
Gleipnir is one of the few manga reads which gets the body horror genre right; the series tells the story of a seemingly average small town sophomore Shuichi Kagaya, who discovers he has a secret power. When a fellow female classmate named Claire gets stuck in a dangerous warehouse sire he realizes that in certain circumstances he can actually transform into a gigantic furry mascot-like bear-adjacent creature, with a zipper detailing on this back!.
He reveals this strange secret to Claire who begins using his power to look for her lost sister, and that’s when things get even weirder.
Now, with this physical shift, Shuichi also gets an unbelievable, almost Hulk-like brute strength, but can’t come to terms with this abnormality and goes under depression. Interestingly, Claire turns out to be a really mysterious character who is looking for a sister, who she claims is a monster; she literally holds his condition over Shuichi’s head so he can’t think clearly.
Manga series which have been adapted into anime have often ended up into bigger successes than the original comic, like One-Punch Man or Nisekoi, when it comes to Gleipnir it would be interesting to watch how this very physicality-driven series does in the anime industry, especially since it has such talented people behind it. Luckily Gleipnir has never been a highbrow series and doesn’t take itself too seriously; there’s an element of quirk and frivolousness associated with the show which really helps it connect with the younger audience.
